Trying not to burn my Cake

I am working on a revision of the plan i had with GManager that i will share shortly, once i get it peer reviewed, that will be leveraging many libraries that i had previously ignored for lack of experience i suppose. The new revision is looking to be quicker to develop, depending on the speed at which i read through my cook book!

the options will be either CodeIgniter or CakePHP

heh, ill be in touch.

Eureka!

Necessity is the mother of invention, and i must say, she is a hell of a MILF. At work i take pride in many things - My book collection, my library of documents related to (12 2″ binders worth in fact), a clean and organized white board and so forth. Today i am going to be focusing on what i consider to be the most important thing that i think a cubicle owner/leaser can have. Cleanliness.

My Wiring system

Wires are not fun. In fact they tend to be quite irritating. Having them run all over ones desk is probably one of the most irritating things. I get the feeling, looking at some cubes, that some people are destined for failure when they lose something. Dont get me wrong about this, I am a pretty chill person, i just find things like having wires running all over the place quite depressing.

Instead i choose to take advantage of the design of my cubicle to help route the wires around in a more un noticeable manner. The cubicles that Broadcom has invested in have a half inch bead right above a hidden compartment (Where i hide my power adapter. I went over to the Supplies Closet and got a bunch of these book binding supplies, they look like little combs, and basically wrapped the wires that need to be pressed into the bead with it. I then press the combs into the bead and voila - wires are hidden, except for corners or  seams in the walls.

Craned Headphones

Secondly, i have a wired headphone set that i am using for all audio purposes here. I sit in a location that makes it very difficult to keep the wire from being screwed up, but i need the mobility to be able to get up and jot ideas down on my white board. The idea i came up with was inspired by a stupid little device that was given to me when i started. A simple little spring powered dealy that was initially used to hang on to my badge is now a wired crane for my headphone cable. I routed the cable along the beads of my cubicle and over to a central location. At that point i run it up to the top of the wall and hook it trough the string that comes out of the gizmo and voila - Craned Headphones. No more running over the cable and no unsightly windings lying around to be irritating when i have to pick them up after knocking them over.

Perl for dummies

In the hours of the early morning here at work i enjoy the silence. It allows my mind to unravel the craziness of the previous day and take quiet walks around the office space. Recently i have been noting the books that people have on their shelves, and its odd - many people have the O’Reilly Programming novel sitting up on their desks/bookshelves here. I say this is odd because so many people dont know a god damned thing about or have a barely functional knowledge of how it works or how to code in it.

One such example is pertaining to a failed attempt to be a software developer. An application with a “Template engine” that is controlled by the function you run previously. This is one aspect of this application that should let you all know how complicated this has been devised. I am convinced that i could simplify the code base considerably, given the freedom to do so, but alas - i cannot.

Its odd that people purchase or borrow or share books when they are not willing to actually read them. There are a number of very interesting and necessary tidbits that sit just below the surface of that are more than useful; that are more than powerful; that are able to correct code that you have just spent four hours working on instead of reading four hours yesterday. It’s called a Map. Use it.

My New Laptop!

xps1730_red_back.jpgI spent a long time looking around before settling on a laptop. I am a gamer/Developer with very particular needs for a laptop and as much as i would love to get a mac, PC’s are the environment that my must take place. I feel the need to develop on a laptop is something that I must take advantage of in order to properly know my place and keep up with my work, so getting a sub standard lappy was not an option. I hope my choice (btw, my internship provides me with an emp. discount through dell so i saved some benjies.) is going to work out. Below are my new lappys specs:

  • XPS M1730, Intel Core 2 Duo T9300(2.5GHz, 800Mhz, 6M L2 Cache)
  • PERSONALIZATION SHIELD, LCD COLOR WING OPTION,RED
  • 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm for XPS M1730
  • 17 UltraSharp TrueLife Wide screen WUXGA for XPS M1730
  • NVIDIA SLI Dual GeForce 8700MGT with 512MB GDDR3 Memory
  • 160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive Free Fall Sensor
  • Windows Vista Ultimate with bonus XP Pro
  • 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
  • Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n) Mini Card
  • Logitech Gaming LCD
  • Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)
  • AGEIA PhysX Physics Accelerator
  • And of course: A Free Recycling Kit

I will keep a running tally of what goes on with Vista and me, but this laptop is for work, school and pleasure. =)
