Why now is a great time to purchase XP.
Years ago I ran into a huge issue getting my dad to convert from windows millennium edition to XP. I was quoted on a number of blogs and AIM profiles, which is how you can tell how long ago it was, as saying ME == GAY. For non programmers, and folks who aren’t hip on internet and then popular language, ME is Millennium Edition, == is programmer jargon for equals or is, and GAY is a term for homosexuals used to describe wrong things. Although a lot of the people who saw my quote spread it around the net trying to say something about my preferences, I received a number of emails and read many a post on forums world wide to the same tune. My dad however saw things differently.

Chronicles of Swallowbush - An exercise in user tracking
Users - we have all been one at some point in our lives. The concept of being one is very straight forward. We users navigate to a site and are unknowingly a part of a case study being conducted by a person or group of people controlling the website we have chosen to land on. Our habits, search phrases, and personal information (I’m not talking credit cards…) are all subject to the developer’s needs and intelligence; if they choose to keep track of who I am and what I like on their site it will be very beneficial to them. This is the first in a possible series of more technical journeys into Swallowbush, and PHP in general. I plan to open up the door to show you how and why things are tracked, and what benefit you can take from that. Read the rest of this entry »

Gneu Updates - 1.18.07
some of you may have noticed that I have made a few updates to the site in the last couple weeks. Well, things are coming together, slowly, but they are none the less. As you may see, Mike is back, and he is going to be taking a larger part in Gneu. Pairing that with the increased traffic that I have seen has caused me to start work on getting Gneu set and ready for our future.
I have begun writing articles for the wiki, which seem to be going pretty well. The wiki itself has begun to flesh out, and there have been a couple users who are taking part and contributing as well. Gneu is evolving. It is finally coming together into the entity that it was intended to be.

Chronicles of Swallowbush - Compatibility
In the previous installment I touched on the issue of browser compatibility, but what do I actually mean by that. More over, what do I mean when I tell people that IE is not respecting standards and therefore sucks? Above all else, Microsoft is a company that is ruled by bottom line numbers, and no one can argue that they don’t do a great job of that. The issue here - they are not willing to live by standards imposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), who exist in order to come together on web standards, and Microsoft has never liked following anyone else’s rules.

Chronicles of Swallowbush - Collaboration then and now
My first attempts at putting a team of developers together were with the fourth build of swallowbush. You see, every six months or so I would have learned enough to make my previous version of the application look like an embarrassment. One of the best ways to learn anything is to actually do it. You can’t learn to fish by reading about it, and similarly you can’t learn to program with out programming. Along the same lines, you are going to learn programming best if you are doing it with others, asking questions, getting questioned and for the most part, looking for reason behind actions.

Chronicles of Swallowbush - Popularity contest.
As with the other posts, I am taking you deep into the experiences that I went through with my recently departed website, swallowbush.com; it is very important to keep in mind that swallowbush served as much more than my blog, it was actually my testing and learning grounds. In today’s installment I bring you my first experiences with the populous, and how I had to change the way I did things so I didn’t kill my server.
